Fox hunting habits

Just a fox being a fox.....their native to us but that doesnt change the man v fox element thats existed in Britain for hundreds of years. I think their cool, but I still split the odd one down the centre. Thanks f*ck I dont have to deal with, Bears, wolfs, puma, racoons etc..............I'd have to buy a machine gun from one of you lot! lol

sorry for the multi posts.

They want to kill and eat every one of your chickens... the remaining one is just the next meal. They dont know "mean," they don't know "guilt" - they know food.
Now, they will raise kits trained to raid chickens coops, thanks to the food your birds provided.

Its you or them. You can tolerate their deprivations, you can attempt to deter them or you can terminate them. Not many other choices, and the choice is yours.

This is distasteful to some, but the fox doesn't care about that either.

they are still snared in scotland this is a very effective way of dealing with most of what you listed :)

Re the Fox/predator issue,Just a thought for those of u who can deal with/accomodate big aggressive dogs.

I was beseiged with the constant onslaught of Foxes grabbing meatbirds at my place here in So Maine until I got a lg female rescue Rotty from a rescue in NH that "temperment tests" them and rehomes them to appropriate homes.

I had no experience with Bully Breeds,I am, however, well versed in the,"nothing in Life is Free" approach required(imo) as I use it with stallions I handle. Anyway,it took a lil while; after one bold Fox got chased by the Rotty in daylite,he mustve told all his Foxy friends to stay away, because my chickens not only wander around my yard all day,but take a walk another 500' down the dirt road frequently, often with a Fox watching from farther down the rd,fearful and keeping its distance. I am totally amazed, its been almost 2 yrs now-no chicken losses. My neighbors on both sides of me keep losing their chickens, despite keeping them contained, and one neighbor having a locked down chicken coop thats a bit like a poultry version of Fort Knox!! Once the Rotty's "Herd dog"(yes,Rottys were bred as Herd and protection dogs in Germany) instincts kicked in (she started marking her territory around my yd every am), as I pointed out a Fox sneaking up on a chicken to her,I havent seen another Fox or coyote within 1000' of my Barn!! Incidentally,I already had another dog for a yr as the Fox ran off with the chickens in daylite in front of me prior to the Rotty,a Husky who had no herding instinct and did not mark his territory as the Rotty did.We have coyotes galore, weasels, raccoons and Bear here, too, havent seen anything near my property since I got my Rotty. Not only that,my dog free neighbors on either side of me have had chicken massacres x 2 last yr during daylite hrs. This may not be an option for many of u I know, though I have to say,the dog is a phenomenal deterrent to burglers, also, judging from what the local Police dept says re this. Shes a bit Bossy,I make her sit before she gets dinner, she grumbles and growls if allowed, scares the daylite out of delivery men,etc... Rottys cant be treated like lapdogs, she is ultra intelligent, quite affectionate, and would protect me and mine with her life, have to say Im looking forward to getting another Rescue Rotty for the Farm this summer... Sarah -

I would LOVE to get a livestock guardian dog of some sort. I think it's a great idea. We have two dogs already but they would be the opposite of guardians for those chickens. :) I love that you rescued a rotty too instead of purchasing a trained LGD pup. I'm glad you've had such great success with it. I'm still working on convincing my husband. Best of luck with any future rotty you get too. They're great dogs.

Thanks Gavada...I heard Great Pyrenees make good Livestock dogs, too, they'd patrol the yard like my Rottie does.At thePyr Rescues they often
list dogs for "LG" purposes that stay outside in a Barn or doghouse.

We have Partterdale terriers over here for all things vermin. A pair of these will fight off a lion and the foxes know they mean business.
