Fox Pictures (next to the coop)

Well I live in utah and in my small community they give you 20 dollars for the ears of coyote. But both fox and coyotie, In our farm community they are considered pests and they got after all sort of farm animals. My father in law has lots of problems with them and thier sheep. Anyways, I'm not sure about your area. But no matter what, shoot it quick! It's a sickly fox, looking for an easy meal and he's not gonna go away. Good luck to you.

If you can, set out a live trap. Fox don't usually go for them, but I think this guy would jump at the opportunity to get any food.

Whether you trap it or shoot it, show us some better pics! LOL

I showed the pics to hubby and told him we were discussing whether it was a stray dog or a mangy fox, his response was "why does it matter? it's a predator standing outside the chicken coop, trap it or shoot it!". Gotta love my baby, he simplifies life.

FWI, I will say its a red fox as well. The coloring of the legs, tips of the ears, body are congruent and the proportions or confirmation is that of a fox. It may have mange, the picture quality because of the distance cost some necessary detail. If it has mange, it will die. On the words of a vet with a tremendous amount of experience with foxes and coyotes, the mange will not cross species. The mange that coyotes get will not cross to foxes. The mange that foxes have will not cross to domestic dogs or cats.

This may also be a samson fox. It is a more rare type that lacks the outer guard hairs. That in combination with the short summer undercoat (the only coat in a samson fox) would look much like what is in the picture. Regardless of the cause of its appearance, get the beast trapped and killed. It won't leave your birds alone.

At our old house, we had ducks and geese - no problems. Then, we got a bunch of packing peanuts, and once they were old enough to go outside, the fox started coming around. Foxes are VERY persistent, and will not simply go away unless "helped". One night I left our big dog out to chase the fox (He was big and in perfect health, and I knew my dog wouldn't actually be able to catch him). That helped scare the fox, but then I caught him trying to get my ducks - I threw rocks and what ever I could find at him, and was yelling like an idiot

A little while later we found a new home for the roo's (they started roosting on the cars... Not good

When they left, and there was no more easy meals, the fox disappeared too. I never once lost a duck or goose!

That fox really looks mangey. Whether he is or not isn't really the point... He is going to keep coming around for your chickens unless you take action. Please note: just because he's mangey doesn't mean he's rabid, but do not trust him what so ever - do not get too close, and make sure your kids know better than to go running in the woods after him! I can't believe parents would allow that

The type of mange we are talking about here is Sarcoptic mange and not host specific.

Sarcoptic mange is a highly contagious infestation of Sarcoptes scabiei canis, a burrowing mite. The canine sarcoptic mite can also infest humans and cats, pigs, horses, sheep and various other species.

Yes to above-I was with the vet when we saw the critters under the microscope. She had said they were hard buggers to find but my poor dog was hit really bad.

you all have some good eyes... I had to blow that picture up more to see the tail and the ears. The tail is definitely long like a fox. At least the right ear is bent over but that could be from an injury or ear mites. But, if you were to unfold that ear, it would be very long... bigger than most fox ears I have seen. Regardless, mostly looks like a fox to me also. Definitely looks like it has mange. Either way, it's a chicken killer and needs dispatched.

I don't think it looks like its ears are bent over.

But whether its ears are bent over or it has a hairless hiney or a long or short tail or what, if it'd been eating all my poultry, I'd blow the sucker away.

My condolences to those that don't share that view. lol
