Fox question

An electric fence would do wonders and are easy to set up. Done right you can stop about any predator that doesn't fly but you may have to drap some deer netting on it to teach your chickens to stay inside it...guess the feathers insulate then from the shock

I thought it was a night time threat, too.

But actually, believe it or not, I JUST came inside after chasing one off with a ninja sword! It was the strangest thing. It is only 6:00pm here.

I have a question, would the attacks during this time be a male or a female? This fox was a lot bigger than most foxes I have seen around here!

What the hell - it's like the end of days!! I did not realize foxes were a daytime threat - have been blaming my losses of free range hens over the last two weeks on hawks. This evening around 6:00 I heard a squabble and went running - saw an enormous fox standing up in my paddock, with a mouth full of feathers. I ran, it ran - I found a huge pile of feathers, one of the orpingtons is gone. I didn't find the body, but I am sure I will.

I had no idea wild foxes could be so big, or so bold. Like the others on this thread, I can't believe I can't let my hens range on my 7 acres, and I can't believe the darn fox can come in under my hot wire which is about 8" from the ground.

I am so angry - and now will look at plans to enlarge my run. I thought it would be safe to let them out just between 10:00 - 3:00, but apparently now that the fox knows the hen buffet is open for business I can't do that either. Maybe my dogs need to spend more time outside.
