Today I was sitting peacefully reading a book when Beau, my collie, went crazy barking, howling, and growling. There was a fox near my creek, looking at my chickens. He went off across the creek because I think that Beau's ruckus kind of scared him, and then I let Beau go run down there to scare him. I know he'll be back, I've seen him before (during the summer) and I assume there's not much to be found for him to eat right now and he is thinking about my chickens. I know that foxes are super difficult to trap. Any suggestions?

Are your chickens in a safe run? The issue is they scout your place and watch you to see when your there and when your not so be very careful

No, they are within electric fence. I would love to build them a run instead though, but the fence has worked wonderfully for the past almost three years.
I know, they are quite smart which is making me really worried.

We had a electric fence and it Was brilliant till a dam tree branch fell and smashed it to smithereens. Be careful and make sure to keep and eye and an ear out for it possibly keep them in their coop but even that won’t do much cause it’ll just come back when you let them out the best I can think of for your fence is three rings so one at the bottom of the fence so it can’t dig one in the middle so I can’t chew and one at the top so it can’t climb be very careful plz

That fox set foot on my land and the dog went nuts. While I'm home he can keep an eye out and I'm fully confidant in him. But when I'm gone he is in his crate. I hope the electric fence works as well this year as it has.
What I'd like to do is to trap it and shoot it. I'd like to find a good trap for him, but I know that they are hard to catch.

I had my dogs save a hen of mine when they cut it off and she is still alive but we just leave the dogs with the chickens when we are out, too much risk!

What heights are your hot wires at on the electric fence and how many Joules is the charger pushing? One hit from the fence should be enough of a deterrent for most ground predators if the charger is up to snuff.
You may also want to test the voltage at the points furthest from the charger to make sure you are not losing any charge to ground.

The bottom wire, and then at pretty regular intervals going up to the top. It would be hard to dig under without getting shocked. I will have my dad check the fence to make sure it is doing its job well.
