Freaking out, maggots in vent

I guess her crop is still full...? It feels pretty similar but doesn’t look exactly the same to me.

Feeling of the crop is easier if you can feel a few on the other hens to practice and to compare what they feel like with food in them. They may not be felt if they are empty and flat. If it feels like a pouch and is hard, or puffy like a balloon, those are abnormal in the early morning. The crop should be empty after not eating or drinking overnight.

It can be difficult to decide when to help end the life a sick or suffering chicken. If they will not accept food or water, and they seem very weak, it may be time. You can watch her a bit longer before deciding if you wish to make a decision. Can she visit with the other hen, to see if that would get her to eat?

That’s a great idea, I will put her out there a bit later today and see if she’ll eat with them. I doubt it though judging by her behavior.

Things are definitely taking a turn for the worse. I didnt give her any meds or supplement this morning to see if she would eat on her own. I had to go to school and when I got back it looks like she had bent over to try and eat and yellow liquid came out. Her poop is attached. I took her outside with the other hens to eat the mash and she just tried to walk back into her coop :hitWhen my SO picked her up to bring her back in he tilted her a bit a thicker yellow liquid came out of her mouth. I want to say it was yolk like but I’m not sure. I’m calling the vet again to see what they think and how much it will cost to euthanize her....

So we ended up not putting her down at the vet. The vet said she had actually gained 31 grams and that the wound was looking better and that she was spitting up the liquid because her crop was too full. That part didn't sound quite right so I did some research and all signs pointed to sour crop. I read the article on this site on it and we've emptied her crop and I've syringe fed her drops of ACV water a bit at a time till she got half of it down with no overflow. After getting all of that liquid out her crop reduced significantly in size. The vet also gave her fluids when we were there last night. She seems to be a real fighter so I'm going to continue to treat her and hope it works even though she's got a lot of problems going on. But at least if she passes I'll have done everything I can and she'll be at home. But let me tell you, the liquid that came out of her crop almost knocked me out. :sick

Figured I’d keep updating this thread. We have been continuing to treat her wound and also for sour crop, which was definitely the cause of the overflow of liquid coming out of her beak. She is starting to make improvement little by little. I’m holding out hope for her.
