Sorry - chicks get here tomorrow and I wasn't at all ok with my setup, so I changed it to the below pic. Does that setup with the lamp hanging look safe? Last thing I want is to burn down my house for $12 worth of chickens and I'm FREAKING OUT.

Thanks in advance for the replies.

95 is ok for the few days but make sure you check the temp often. You do not want to over heat them.
And make sure they are able to get away from the heat too.

Get some rest...you'll be up all night tomorrow watching chick TV!!
Sweet dreams.

I would move it away a bit from the wood. I'm like you and worried all night when I had mine in the house. Keeping the light away from the wood box would be a priority for me.

That is my concern too. I had it clamped on but it was just too close for my comfort. I might also put a piece of tin foil over the plywood with the reflective side up.

Thanks again for the replies!

Hi! You didn't mention the wattage of the light...but I'm assuming it's 175/250 watts? If it is I would probably move the light away from the wall a bit...just to be on the safe side. I'm also a worrier...lol. (It may be a light for reptiles and a lesser wattage...I'm not as familiar)

You don't have to use a 250 watt bulb. I use a 6-0-100 watt incandescent bulb depending on the ambient temperature.
You beat me keesmom...lol.

I do something different like keesmom, I use a 65 watt flood light I get at the dollar store over the chicks in the house. It's very affective because everything's reflected down. It also doesn't heat the house up as much.

Day old chicks don't really do much for the first week+ so I wired simple phenolic sockets to hold the flood light and hang it slightly lower. Some people prefer the red...but my chicks never pick so I just use the cheap white lights. It's a personal preference. :)

How old r the chicks? If they are over a week...u don't need the temp to be 95. If its nice and warm were u r...u can raise the lamp a bit more. If its nice and warm were u r..and u have them in a draft free location 90 will still b fine..chicks also have each other and will pile up in a corner. Raise the lamp a bit if u are worried...wont hurt. U don't want it to be to hot..chicks will get pasty butt. If the chicks r stressed when they come in ..keep it at 95 for a few days until they are better.
