I was thinking the worst also, I am very fortunate.

I am so sorry for you. What did you lose? That hawk is big enough to carry off all of your birds!

That's a small one! We had some red-tailed that were three times the size of that one. Luckily, I've only lost peeps. 1 rosecomb 2 wk old, 2 mf cochin 6 wk olds

My father says they are migrating now so we will probably get a new one every so often til they all get where they're going.

I thought the coast was clear the other day... hadn't seen one in a week. I let all the rosecombs out and in two minutes heard this ruckus. I ran outside and couldn't find a one. I called them and theard them clucking discreatly in a bush. I ran to get a crate so I could load them up and take them back to the coop and as I was running away I saw the huge hawk out of the corner of my eye in the tree right above them!! He was spreading his wings and ready to go. I ran back over screaming and clapping my hands like a looney tune. It worked though. He took off. I rounded up my babies and got them all safe and sound and haven't let them out since.

It's sad to see them so bummed not being able to freerange but I have two little bitties left and I know they would be toast.

You were fortunate to have been there. Many more could have been taken. Sorry to hear about the peeps as they are hard to come by with the breeds you have. Once they are accustomed to free ranging, they are sad doing anything less. That is one of the reasons I feared for my silkies as they are the only thing not allowed to free range on my place.

In a few days, your birds will be used to their locked in status...
