I hang the Oyster Shells the same way.
I drilled several 3/32" holes in the bottom to drain moisture from grit and shells, not for the water though.

Is it attached or freestanding? I'm thinking I'll need to mount somethingI use a metal feeder, works fine. And sometimes some poo lands in it's open top, easily scooped out, and not a big deal. Chickens do make messes!
