Daisy, my africans and muscovy ducks free range my horse pasture 24/7 and do great. My other ducks are also over there, but they put themselves up in their coop at night as they are miserable being outside in our extra bitter cold weather. My dewlaps also live outside 24/7 in my front yard and do pretty well, but they appreciate deep bedding so they are not sleeping directly on the frozen ground. All my waterfowl get lots of whole kernel corn to help keep weight on, but they tend to lose a bit of their fatty pouches over the winter. Luckily, they bounce right back in the spring when the lush pasture grass grows back. I have a couple of toulouse/african ganders and muscovy ducks that can fly really well, but they never leave the property.
Poultry Couture, you avatar is hysterical. I showed it to my hubby because it reminded me of his mare when she was a yearling. He thought it was a hoot, too.
