I am petrified at the thought of free ranging my chooks. We have hawks and crows just to name a couple of airborne predators besides the fox, bears, raccoons, you name it. We live on an acre in a highly wooded area, surrounded by trees.
My daughter has severe neurological disorder from tick bite. She and her family live in the same house with us. (She has a YouTube channel she just started to let people follow her progress AND more importantly, teach people the reality of tick diseases) Ticks are a huge problem. I know chickens will eat ticks but to do that they must free range. :barnie This site talks about this and prompted me to post here. http://www.wideopenpets.com/tick-co..._medium=partner&utm_term=stp&utm_campaign=stp
I've considered getting a large group of chickens intended for meat and free ranging them because hopefully they wouldn't be as close to my heart as my current egg layers/pets. I had thought of guineas but the noise they make would be sensory overload for my daughter.
Any thoughts?
And, if you would like, check out my daughters channel. She only has 3 videos up at this point. Here's the first one so you can see her and then see the others and then subscribe if you wish.

Chickens suck at ticks, guineas are your best route.
Oh I know how good guineas would be. They just aren't something Trisha can tolerate. I made a loud noise in front of her and she went into what she refers to as her "freeze frame" mode. Her muscles freeze into whatever position she in and, although she can still converse a little bit (mostly to say " wait a minute this will pass") she can't move for several minutes. It's part of the neurological problem ticks have caused her.
Ticks are what suck.

I heard guineas are the best for ticks. But I think they can be abit loud! Sorry about your daughter. Is it something that will improve?
We are hopeful, the Dr. Is encouraging, but it is probable she will be permanently disabled. We're just starting down this long road to possible recovery so she is documenting her travels.

I am so sorry your daughter is suffering so badly from her tick bite!! My mother in law got Lymes disease from a tick a couple of years back when she was helping clear the woods here in Northern Portugal and she was very poorly for quite some time. If it's not to personal a question, how long ago did Trish come down with this? My mother-in-law was 80 when she was struck down but recovered after a couple of months.:hugs

Yes,I am just as curious about the disease, sorry about her, will it improve and is something young people get or what?
Anyone can get it. Trish is 47. She may have had it for many years. 10 years ago they diagnosed her with fibromyalgia. Now that is a questionable diagnosis. Over the years she has been tested for everything from Lupus to arthritis. She has lost 2 very good careers due to sick days. She dropped out of college a few months back when she got so sick she couldn't get out of bed without help. That's when she started stuttering. And THAT'S when Dr. decided to test for Lyme disease. Turns out she has Lyme Disease and Babesiosis, a tick born disease that is similar to malaria. If you decide to look into this disease further try some of the videos she has "liked" on her channel. It's truly shocking how little information is out there for the public.
Please learn more. I don't really want to turn this into a thread about Lyme. But I pray that it might encourage others to become aware.
My main reason for this post is to find thoughts on free ranging under predator fear and possible alternatives.

My oldest son was also struck by Lyme disease but thankfully recovered after a few months, we were able to catch it in time but my Aunts stepson was not so fortunate, it has changed his life forever. Your daughter is in my prayers.
Thank you prayers are very welcome!
I'm glad your son was able to recover. My husband is from England. As soon as he came to the USA to marry me 13 years ago he was struck with Lyme. We caught it early because he had the bullseye. He's fine, but he always has it in the back of his mind that it could reactivate at any time. Trisha never had a bullseye.
