Free ranging in snow?

All of mine were hatched on July 16 and I got them on July 18. Amazing that they all already grown up and laying eggs! At least 2 of them are. We have only had 2 green eggs from Charlotte, the Easter Egger and 8 brown from Magda, the Barred Rock. About half of the brown eggs have been small. All of the normal sized ones are double yolks. Do you know anything about that?
What time is it there?

Double yolkers are normally from new layers while they are still sorting themselves out. I have heard of the odd bird that lays them all the time but it is not that common. Time here now is 9am tuesday 18th Dec :) The cochins made it through the heat hopefully it wont be quite as hot today finger crossed.

Yikes. I also looked at the temp conversion. I have never been in that kind of heat. My daughter Anna experienced some while in grad school in the state of Arizona. I will opt for snow any day. It is really very beautiful, especially what we had last weekend, coating every branch of every tree. Then, when the sun shines it is magnificent! Do you have meat birds as well as layers? Do you expect more of this extreme heat? How do you help your animals deal with it? Do they eat less and stop laying? I suppose you just stay inside in the A/C as much as possible.

yeah we get up to 40c normally over summer (not every day) this week is suppossed to be really hot. We need some rain for sure. No i don't have meat birds... Well except the turkeys.. They eat about the same but they go into moult alot quicker in the heat. I have so many either broody or moulting right now. I turn the sprinklers onto the pens to try to cool them down but they arent really fans of it. I upped the cochins with the hose yesterday. They free range in the afternoons on the back of our acerage which has many trees so they can go out there if they choose too. I don't have air con, just fans but our house has really good insulation so if it is 45c outside it is only 36ish or so inside.

You know it's funny. I could not imagine a cold christmas as i am sure you could not imagine a hot one. Funny how different the two places we live are :)

Can they? Of course they can! I don't have a run. They either stay in the barn, or they free range. They usually choose to stay in the barn, but there are the odd few that venture out.

Some just do anything possible to keep their feet clean from snow.
