Free ranging problem with neighbor

I wasn’t quoting you, I was referring to someone else’s comments. I think OP has seen plenty of comments that are against what they were doing. Those comments aren’t helpful going forward. Some constructive ideas might help fix the situation rather than rub their nose in what they have been doing wrong.

A lot of us are against what the OP is doing because the OP is in the wrong. Many of us have offered constructive ideas & are trying to help. The people who are saying things like, ‘I’m so sorry you have a neighbor like that’ & ‘ask your neighbor why they don’t like it’ etc.. are the people that are not being constructive. Sure, it might sound nicer to the OP’s ears, but letting them believe they have a right to their neighbors property is certainly not helping.

The neighbor is responsible for the dog. The chicken owner is responsible for the chickens.

It's just that's already been established, so it's not that helpful to repeat. It's better to help think of some solutions to the problem. As I said in my own post, I think it's easier to put up a simple black plastic net fence. If she is determined to build a run then it should be as large as possible with at least 10 sqft. A portable run could be good. Also she should talk to the neighbor. Basically what would you do if you were in her position or want if you were in the neighbor's position?

By the way, it is my opinion that the term, "Free Range" is another "feel-good, modern expression" to describe a popularized method of raising meat and/or egg animals. Free range or free ranging are "new speak" terms that have rhetorical implications, just like "weather change" and "organic". Instead of stating that you "free range" your chickens, maybe you should just say that you open your pens to allow your chickens to run loose in the neighborhood, pooping in your neighbors' yards as they make their rounds...

What do you mean? Are you saying "free-range" means something specific and gets misused?
I've heard the "free-range" label on eggs from the store actually means nothing, since it is only regulated for meat birds, not for eggs. Even for meat birds it only means possible access to the outdoors. Are you saying "free-range" has no meaning anymore since it is so often used as false advertising?

Also what do you mean about "organic"? What rhetorical implications?

The OP has not participated in this thread for a while. We should wait and see if OP is making adjustments before investing too much in discussion. Odds are OP is having to do some mental processing before making changes and responding on this thread.

Ok so let me start by stating - I absolutely do not regret free ranging my chickens. They are healthy, happy, produce good eggs and it’s less work.

But now my neighbor has suddenly decided they are a problem after MONTHS. I can’t suddenly make them not free range. I have been making them stay in the run more because of a fox that ran into my yard (attempt was not successful) but still- after like 10 am my chickens go out in the world and find their food. And I would just like to state- I only have 5 birds left. We got 8 originally and it’s my first flock so I wanted to start small and learn. We are surrounded by woods and fields but sometimes they go in her yard. It feels more frustrating than anything else because they don’t actually do anything over there except eat bugs. She doesn’t have a garden in any form- it’s just a lawn.Maybe I am just looking to vent...

I have the opposite issue. I have a neighbor on each side who refuses to leash their dogs when walking or kenneling/controlling their dogs while outside. So I have to keep my girls contained to my fenced backyard instead of allowing them to roam free in my front yard. ( front isn’t fenced in). They both have said they aren’t responsible for theirs dogs actions, because they are dogs and do what they want. I replied with “I’m not responsible for my actions when it comes to your dog”.

I guess you now know—your chickens, your responsibility! And they will be far safer fenced in your own property. I like the example of neighbors dogs lounging around on your property, even if doing no harm. Maybe your neighbor stepped in a big pile of poop. Or maybe he or she thought they were loose by accident and gave you the opportunity to correct the situation. They we’re rather patient actually!

Our neighbours chickens visit our yard. Our chickens are cooped up. I do t mind it much. I had more issues with their goats coming over to visit and eating our vegetables.
I do believe though, if they cause issues do something about it.
