I got my Game roo already grown and free-ranging. When I got my 2 grown hens I put them into our chain-link fenced backyard with a small greenhouse that I converted into a chicken mansion. Those hens were so cute checking out their new digs. The roo soon hopped over the fence and has settled in too. He still goes over the fence every day, but he never roams anymore. He just walks around the yard for a bit, then returns to his 'wimmin' who are both sitting a nest at present.
Our garden consists of slightly raised beds in the backyard. They do dig a bit, and they have nibbled young tomato and pepper plants down to nubs. We just replanted and then wrapped chicken wire arond the beds we don't want them in. They pretty much leave the cabbages and squash alone except to dig.
I made them a neat new toy this weekend...I dug out a depression in the yard about 3'X2' and about 8" deep. I lined it with a piece of that black felt-like cloth that keeps weeds from popping through and filled it up with white play sand. Today I saw each of my 3 chickens enjoying the sand bath.
