Free-Ranging...will they get in the road????

I look at it as free dinner

Got the same situation here. The neighborhood gossip is that they have a ton of chickens and really don't care, the guys who work at the place (repairs?) sometimes actually try to hit them with their cars.

AHA!
I blame my teen roo for leading the girls astray.
They freeranged happily on my 5ac for more than a year before I added Mister & his Sister to the flock.

Thanks to him, they crossed the road to scratch up my non-chicken neighbors' fancy landscaping.
I made peace with 1/2doz fresh eggs & a promise to keep them on my side of the road.

Now they are under House Arrest in their (spacious) fenced yard when I am at work.
Freeranging is limited to when I am home to keep an eye on them.

I may try putting up t-post or bamboo fencing under the trees that line the road to see if that works, but I can't chicken-proof the whole 5ac!

When we drive on a fairly busy road to the in-laws, we go past a home that has free range chickens. I have seen them close to the road, and sure enough one day I saw a hen squished on the road. I think the best thing is if you can have a fence to keep them just in your back yard.

I've often wondered the same thing. I know of two residences near where I live that allow their chickens full access to the front yard without fencing. One doesn't seem that big of a deal being in more of a residential area, while the other is on corner lot facing a major 4 lane road and intersection.

I think what keeps them contained is landscaping. There's much more exciting things going around in the dirt around them than concrete. With that said, I'm sure there's also a chicken version of a Darwin Award as well, so...

I'd carry some scratch and a poultry hook.

Much more likely to be successful.

I startled the most beautiful, big, creamy-colored rooster yesterday while riding my bike, not at the place where all the chickens are either, a few streets over. He had a hen or two with him, he probably belonged to someone who cares about him though. The only reason I can think of to trap ferals is to bring fresh genetics into my flock.

My neigbors chickens are always in the road. I am not sure if they even have a coop, not that I ever see anyone at the partially abandoned/under construction house..besides the chickens. One chicken was hit two weeks ago and last week a car swerved to miss a chicken as I was heading down the road. I am fearful that an accident involving a child/car or car/car will occur before the town steps in and takes the chickens from the property. I have chickens that free roam, and I am all for letting them roam wherever they want. However, when it comes to chickens in the road, owners should think about people getting hurt; not just their chickens being hit.
