Free ranging

What age do you start letting your chicks free range? Mine are 6 weeks and they seem so small to let free range yet.
I let them Freerange after all Pullets have been laying in nests at least one month.
My Pullets are 17 weeks old today and a Pullet was sitting in a nest box.
Surprising because she first squatted Saturday.

We let ours begin free ranging around 8-10 weeks (supervised at first, of course). It helps that for the first few weeks they tend to stick to a much smaller area and don't stray too far from each other.

When do you separate the mother and chicks?
