Free Ranging

I was told recently that a hawk can take a duck easily lifting them off the ground and this person has Pekins. Our ducks roam with our chickens all day so we have the benefit of a very diligent rooster.

I have watched my ducks outside with a turkey vulture and sometimes a hawk fly over head. They seem to keep tabs on the birds and I have seen them "run for cover" if the bird looks like it may be coming in. My rouen duck just had ducklings and she is more vigilant. Ravens went over the other day and she quacked to get everyone's attention and brought them to a more protected spot. I do let them free range all day as we are on a busy farm and people in and out. They seem to be aware at all times of what is "going on" above so I haven't worried too much. Perhaps I should be more careful with them though...
