Free "rare" mystery chick? UPDATE: New Pictures!

I also ordered from them and I'm expecting my chicks the week of feb 12th :D I'm not sure if I can identify my freebie though. I'm getting 26 chicks... all are difrent breeds so I will already be playing the guessing game! I'm hopeing that I get packing peanuts (still gigiling over that term). My hubby said we can make the coup larger and have one just for the little guys later (but not now... too many new house costs for now). I will post pics of all of the chicks and see if people can identify whats what when they come

So jealous! I wanted to get mine that weekend but they didn't have some of the breeds available that I really wanted. Check back in if you figure out what your mystery chick is!

I am also getting a mystery chick! Along with the ornamental layers so they will all be a bit of a mystery! These will be my first chickens.. they are due to get here 1/29 - 2/1! I am soooo excited!

My mystery chick was a White Ameraucana rooster. He is beautiful. I have 3 orders coming in February so I'm getting 3 mystery chicks.

Part of the fun in getting day old chicks is trying to figure out which chicks belong to what breeds. I think that's really fun and educational for us too.

On the McMurray website, near the bottom of each page of each breed, they have some photos and videos of each specific breed and color, to help us with identifying the chicks when they arrive. I liked that feature on their website. Which is one of the reasons I bought from them too.

I bought some last year, and this year, I ordered a batch of 25 chicks to arrive Jan 30th, but I deliberately left out the free mystery chick because I didn't want another roo to have to be dealt with. Don't know if they will send any extra free pullets. All mine are supposed to be 25 pullets sexed.

They didn't make any mistake in my last year's order. Hope they'll be good this year.

I've order from MM two times in the past, both time the free chick was a roo. Sort of to be expected so I wasn't bothered by it.
Now they didn't include any extras and I had them sent to Alaska in April, we still have snow then. All arrived healthy so I don't think anyone stateside has to worry about shipping. They shipped mine on a Thursday evening, I had a call from the PO on Saturday at 6:20am telling me they arrived and come get them. Customer Service has always been excellent with MM, I've never had a problem with them. I couldn't ID the difference between two breeds so I called them and they walked me through which was which.

Now this year I'm doing it a bit different, ordered from 3 different hatcheries for delivery the same week, we'll see how that goes.

My freebie was a Buff Polish Crested, a rooster, of course. We named him Mick. He was really easy to spot, he looked like he had a gum band tight around the top of his head right out of the box! lol. He was sweet, but alas, was taken by a fox, or coyote last summer. The only one we've lost out of the batch so far. ):
All mine were sexed right, but I got 6 red stars and 4 araucanas, instead of the 5 each I ordered. I'm glad though, I love those red stars, they lay beautiful, huge brown eggs! If I ever order chicks again...yeah, right. I mean, when I order chicks again, I plan on ordering from McMurray. They were all healhy and all are still doing great 9 months later (except poor Mick) Good luck with your peeps!

The first time we ordered from McMurray, the "Free Mystery Chick" was a Buff Polish rooster. He was good-natured enough, but useless, so we eventually processed him.

Anymore, we always opt out of the "free mystery chick," because it is invariably an unwanted rooster.

The last time we ordered however, McMurray accidentally (or not!) sent one anyway--a buff Cochin. He's gentle and nice to look at, but stupid and he crows too much. It's just an extra bother to try to process him.

I LOVE McMurray by the way---always have been thrilled with their chicks.

Thank you for all of the feedback everyone! It seems like I might be getting a polish rooster lol. I would LOVE that! Polish are beautiful and such a fun conversation piece. Keep the posts coming! This is so fun
