Last February my neighbor and I went in together on an order from McMurray. It was really bad weather and we lost about 10 in the first order, including a polish rooster. He was about half the size of the big breed chick we had ordered and pretty trompeled when we opened the box. He didn't stand a chance and died 4 hours after we got him. There was absolutely no problem getting our chicks replaced.
I asked them to send a large size mystery chick with the replacement order and we got a Partridge Cochin rooster. I kept him and absolutely love him. He is a mellow rooster and watches out for his girls. We are in a valley near I-5 in Western Washington that the military helicopters regularly fly. That rooster does his "churk, churk" and the girls run for the bushes. He even notices airplanes way up in the sky. We have a toy poodle puppy that thought it would be great fun to chase the girls. He could have easily hurt her seriously or killed her. He just gave her a good pull of her hair and that was the end of her chasing chickens. I just love his crow and love to tell him how handsome he is. I only kept him and 5 girls from the order - all different breeds. I did lose one hen this past October. I didn't know it could be fatal for them to molt AND set on eggs. She was my favorite - a Delaware that chattered at me every day. I still miss her.
Here is a picture of my rooster named, what else? Mystery
Here he is as a chick

and here he is all grown up:

These are my first chickens and I really enjoy them - especially my rooster. I have 4 hens and now that they are through with their molt I am getting 3- 4 eggs everyday. I share them with family and co-workers and it is fun to see how happy they are to get them.
Vickie
