FREE RIR Rooster, 6 months old, Conroe Texas

wow. no my RIR did not have fowl pox, nor any of the rest of our tiny flock. with all the rain, I sure can see the risks, as I guess it can come from mosquitoes.
I have never vaccinated either. will that be a problem for him? can he get sick from your flock, or is only contageous when they are sick? shucks!!

thanks for sharing more information about what you are wanting todo as far as breeding. sounds like you have ambitions!
and of course you wouldn't trade a pullet for a rooster- you cant blame me for asking, heh, heh! that was just a silly idea I had. I just wanted this rooster to lay eggs for me, ya know?

yes, I agree Ms Henderson isn't much of a talker but she sure seems to be a wise old country gal, eh?

Anyway, thanks for sharing about the Joy House. Looks like you are really doing your part to do good in the world. I was inspired reading the website.

let me know when you are ready and I'd love for my little guy to come join you at the Joy House!!! He will be so happy to support your cause there and avoid the frying pan himself! and his name....hahaha is.... Emily- he's supposed to be a SHE remember!!! hahahaha!

I feel for you about the 3 pullets that are acting suspicious. I was in denial up until this one started crowing daily!!!

We are in no hurry to rehome him, like I said, as long as he behaves and doesn't start getting aggressive with us or his hens. If he behaves then he may be meant to live at the Joy House!!

Hey Mary,

I am getting mixed messages about the fowl pox. Some say that if i bring in a new chicken that never had it...... he will need to be vaccinated..... I need to research this more thoughly.... My Friend who has one of my original RIR roosters, (who has already been vaccinated and who already went through the fowl pox with the entire flock) is going to give him back. He was a chicken that I hatched out of an egg and he has already been exposed to or vaccinated or endured the same illnesses that mine have.... We have gone through cocci-fowl pox- and everyone has been wormed.... Then I also had an issue with cold mud and hay trapping amonia and causing coughing in one of my bantams so I put the flock on antibiotics......

I am so afraid that I will get your perfectly healthy 6 mo roo moves over here, he will come down with the cocci or pox that is in this area. I would hate to get him for him to just die.... Cocci killed 3 or mine and possible another that died from unknown causes before. They say that cocci is in the ground and you can never be rid of it... but that the chickens develop an immunity against it or they die. Fowl pox is from mosquitos like you said. IF you get anyone who is interested in your ROO.... let them have him. I have to better educate myself about these diseases before exposing others, and since my friend is giving back the 15 week old RIR that has been through all this......already immune to all of it... He will be safe.

Maybe you should repost this since I probably killed your chances of anyone else who might have been interested. I am so sorry. I am glad that I realized what all I have to deal with. I wonder if I will ever be able to get any other chickens without vaccinating and medicating for cocci and woms and antibiotics.... aaaaauuuuugggghhhh!
