Many posters are missing the OP concern. The OP states he was willing to kill them himself - -just too busy.
Instead, he wanted to see them go to somebody in the hobby who was not interested in a "FREE" meal ticket.

He could of sold them - - - but he gave them away. That person immediately "FLIPPED" them to make a profit.

The OP issue comes in with somebody lying to him JUST To make a profit.

For example IMAGINE how mad your would be - - - if you took chickens to a chicken swap and gave one away to somebody.
Then that person went two doors down and put a "for sale" sign on the chicken I had just given them.

The OP has every right to be ticked because he was deceived. He cared enough to search for what he thought was a better situation for his roosters and had the misfortune of trusting a couple of con artists.

I just had to give up the ducklings that hatched from the eggs that were dumped on me last month, and I care very much that the woman who took them represented herself and her intentions for them honestly. For some of us it isn't as simple as handing our animals over to the first taker or adopting an "out of sight out of mind" attitude. These people are slime balls.

My mom has told this story over and over, but when she was 15 my grandparents purchased a farm and moved onto it. They didn't have any livestock yet, and since they wanted to be a "true" farm, and raise animals for food, etc. they put an ad similar to the one you found on CL in the local paper.

It's how they got all of their ducks, chickens, rabbits, even a pig and sheep!

We've thought about posting an ad like that, but I wouldn't say pet home. My ad would look more like this:

7 acre farm willing to take in those Easter chicks, ducks, rabbits or what ever other livestock baby you bought your kid that is no longer "cute". Animals will be well fed and cared for. Please note, we are not a pet only farm.

As I said in my earlier post, I'd be mad that they lied, not that they are now selling them.

Question for the O.P. - well for everyone really - if you were "re-homing" chickens or ducks for free because you just can't take care of them, and a person comes to get them an honestly says to you they will take them all, but will probably sell a few, what would you do then? I doubt the person would be allowed to leave with whatever it is you're giving away, right?

I would be po'ed because they LIED. There is no reason to lie. Tell the truth. Just because you have to rehome pets doesn't mean you don't care about them. I adopted a rooster off a person that wanted a pet only home, He is happy here and I have talked to her since she always asks how he is I say he lover it here and he does. He will be here til he passes.

I've seen goat breeding websites that often have animals for sale, and they may state these animals were part of a herd they obtained from someone going out of business, or downsizing. These sellers are well-known names in their respective breeds. I would imagine in such cases they purchase the animals in a flock, then keep the best ones and offer the rest to other buyers.

Hands down, it's not right to lie to someone to get an animal from them.

You would think so, but we've run into A LOT of people in our area that think even "farm" animals (i.e. food on legs) shouldn't be kept as anything other than pets only.

Math Ace and Seahen got what I'm saying down to a "T". If I wanted, I could have sold them. However, they "sold" me on the story of how these birds get a life of chicken luxery... so I gave them free BECAUSE of that. I was willing to give them out free to what I thought was a good home for them. If I was selling them I would have less of a right to complain, although it would still be a bit rude on their part.

I stand by it. It isn't cool to take a grown bird from someone who hatched it and raised it, after telling a story of how they will be free ranging pets who are loved and cared for, and turning around within the week and selling them for a profit. All they put into those birds was gas money to get them. I SPECIFICALLY said I wanted to find the Barnevelder a "forever" home. I talked about how he was a rare breed in the US and good quality... I wanted him to go somewhere where he could be loved because he wasn't getting along with his penmates anymore. "oh, yes, yes" they reply. "We have 100+ acres and chickens can have the run of it. We even have a Great Pyranees to stay with them and keep them safe." That is what they said. They DIDN'T say, "I'm going to take this bird you raised for free and sell it."


Now, if you buy hatching eggs or straight run chicks and you have a surplus... why would anyone get upset if you sell them? We are talking about lies told to get freebies and then a IMMEDIATE flip.

I would be upset if that happened.I dread having to do it if my chicks turn out to be roosters.Though if it is a mean rooster I won't care to much.

I would call them and let them know what I thought about them.Would flag their posts,and every time they posted I would comment on how these people cry the good cry to get a free animal and then flip them for cash.We have a lady on our local craigs that takes in free pets and flips them.

I'm so sorry this happened to you, but I probably would not list "for pet" bacause if I give something away I have no more say over what happens to it or what the new owners do (and they ARE the new owners). It's sad that they lied to you. Perhaps they needed the money or maybe they felt that you had no right to place the roosters with conditions on the placement.
