Free standing wood burning stoves

We heat exclusively with wood. We don't have a blower on this soapstone stove since it heats the entire house pretty well. Since this fall was much colder than normal, much earlier than normal, we are using wood at a fast clip and may need to buy a second cord.

Here in the northeast it gets worse every year, especially with the price of gas/oil/propane and the economy. Trouble is every moron on the block tries to heat with wood and what we end up with is a neighborhood that smells like we're in the middle of a forest fire. Personally I'd support banning it but I know that wouldn't go over well. Wood emissions have hundreds of times the particulates than oil or gas does. People with asthma and other breathing disorders suffer the worst from it. For me it's a nuisance. I'd like to nail a board over some of the chimney bellowing heavy white smoke. They look like locomotives.

Secondary burner or high heat wood stoves are much better but also cost a lot more. Pellet stoves burn cleaner too.

I heat using propane in a stove very similar to the link HappyMtn posted. It's clean and reliable. I supplement with electric.

We've been heating our house with one for the last 30+ years. We have access to an unending wood supply on our farm so it's definately cheaper for us. I'm not sure how much money you would save tho if you had to buy all your wood.

here in n. il. a chord runs 75-125 delivered & stacked

our ins. went up significantly for the wood burner
ours sits up on tile surround
has a back heat guard
chimney built
professionally installed

and the ins. co. had to come out and take photos for their records

Wood, even if bought, is the cheapest, followed by pellets, coal, oil, natural gas, propane, and finally electric.

Here in CT

For a million BTUs of heat:

Electric @ $.22/kw = $60
Propane at $3.20/gal = $39
Natural gas at $20/1000cf = $20
Oil at $2,80/gal = $19
Pellets at $200/ton = $15
Wood at 250/cord = $12

Quick math +/- 5%
