Freeranging with cows??

Chickens are the best for breaking up manure.

Dexters are best kept in the freezer.

I'm in the process of reading a book called "The Omnivore's Dilemma" by Michael Pollan and he wrote about a farmer named Joel Salatin in Virginia who raises chickens, turkey, pigs, rabbits, cattle on a 450 acre farm with 100 acres of pasture. The cattle are all grass fed and he moves them every few days into a new pasture and then moves the chickens in to eat the grubs in the cow pies. The chickens spread the cow manure around ,add their own and basically fertilize the pastures and keep the cycle going.

It's a great book. He also wrote "In Defense of Food". Both of these books would be interesting to anyone who is growing their own food and trying to get away from the grocery store.

Thanks for the link to the Polyface Farm website. I was going to search for that at some point, but you saved me from putting it off and forgetting about it.

Now I just wish I had more than 1 1/2 acre, but at least we can have chickens and a garden.

I need to take new pic's of our cow's for our website, so when I get them done, I will post them on here so that you can see them. They really are great cows!!
