A freeze/frost advisory was just posted for tonight. I planted the entire garden on Memorial Day. We've had heavy rain all week and my poor tomatoes are just starting to recover. Now a freeze warning has been issued!

My rule for years has been NEVER plant before June 1st. This year everyone was planting and I jumped the gun. I guess it's my own fault for not following my own rules!

I'll be spending the afternoon covering everything up and hope the wind doesn't take it away again. I'm just thankful I didn't plant any of the flowers yet!

My poor chicks haven't been able to go out and play for a week because of the rain and now it's too cold again. I really should move further south!

Good luck saving your plants. Can you hold down the covering with rocks or something? I'm always planting too early, and have tomatoes do fine if it's just a light frost. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you.
We've had a cold spring & winter here as well. My clematis are just blooming now. They've never been later than April before. But on the good side Summer has hit, supposed to be in the 80's today.

Imp- expecting sunburn this afternoon. Ouch!

It's supposed to freeze here tonight too

This is the second time since memorial day. Guess we'll be covering all the veggies again tonight.

A cardboard box over each plant, with a rock on top, works pretty well. For rows, you can lay twiggy branches or pine boughs on the plants (to hold the cover off the plants) then lay a bedsheet on and actually cover the edges of the bedsheet with soil, like lightly trench them in, so it doesn't blow off.

Usually if there is wind there is not much actual frost, so that helps too.

Good luck,

Pat, going to have a hard freeze tonight too

Come on down South. we planted in March and have fresh tomatoes and squash already!!!!! I did wait to plant the corn until April, but it's looking good and I can't WAIT til it's ready. We've also got the pool cleaned and ready to swim in. Seriously though, I do hate the late season frosts, it's SOOOO much work getting trees and shrubs covered. Maybe it won't get down that low.

Many local farmers have been saying they expect a frost June 7th?!?!?!?!? So . . . *sigh* . . . we decided to wait another 10 days to plant outside. I almost went out to put in my beans yesterday, but I held off.

I guess there really is something to the Farmer's Almanac.

It's global warming, No it's global cooling, No it's global ???? nothing

Imp- better go lie down now.

Ugh, it is so discouraging! They are calling for patchy frost here. It is such a gamble...If I spend an hour covering everything up, it won't frost, if I don't....I just want it to be summer already! This is record breaking cold for upstate NY. Gotta love it! I found using upside down clay and plastic pots worked pretty well, last year. I always have tons of those laying around...

Same thing here, also. We stake all of our extra sheets and comforters out.... that's what we did in the last frost and it worked great! Looks very, VERY ghetto fabulous in our yard when we do it - buy, hey, the plants stay warm!
