If they free range like you said in your post, could it be they have some hiding places??? Maybe you should go hunting...

Honey, if you got chickens because you wanted eggs, you might be barking up the wrong tree. Remember the old saying what came first the chicken or the egg? Chickens lay when and where they want to. We are the receivers of the jewels if they see fit. Ya gotta treat em like queens and maybe just maybe they will grace you with an egg.

Don't give up they'll lay when they want to.

You're being too hasty.... why throw away the investment you've already made? consider the fact that they've gone through a hot summer, they've still had to grow their adult plumage, they may even have had a bit of a molt in there somewhere, and now the daylight hours are shorter... they're just really getting into what could possibly be their laying time, despite the shorter days. I would bet that if you be patient, feed them a good quality food through the winter, when the days get warmer this spring you'll probably be delighted with your egg laying ladies! (unless of course you have a passel of roosters, and then you just have trouble... ;-)

I only have 2 hens and I get 2 eggs most days, sometimes just 1 a day. I give them yogurt everyday on top of their feed being 18% protein and put golf balls in their boxes. It seems to work.

I really just think it is the timing. I am all for harvesting them if they don't lay in the spring, but April is an akward time to get hens, but then again. If you have the set up to brood babies indoor get some babies in Febuary and by July you should have eggs. Or Find some started pullets locally. Good Luck no matter what you decide!!!!!!

Oh honey! There is no doubt who the Queens are around my house.

If I have chores to do in the house, they come to the back door about twenty times a day and start pounding on it. I think they want me to come out to play or help them find more food. I can dig deeper for worms.

If I do not get up fast enough in the morning to let them out…( just before the sun comes up)….they start a riot.

It is the same at night. If one of the neighborhood kids start screaming or crying, they think something is being killed…... then all the Queens come running, and want me to do something to “save” whatever is crying.

Go figure.

If the hawk shows up, they all scream until I come out and shoo it away….even though they have very big butts and this is small hawk. What am I a rooster!
