Freezing water

My waterer is home made. I use an 11 gallon tote with lid I bought from Walmart. I add horizontal nipples. To keep it all flowing and thawed during the cold spells I use a stock tank deicer in the bottom of the tote. My water has stayed thawed down to the -20s F. The tote gets filled every week or so for 12 birds.

In the winter, I just take buckers of warm water out every other day, and that will keep it form freezing, for a day or too. Then I just break the ice on top of the bucket until they have drank most of it for it to freeze fully, then I bring another bucket of warm water out. You could also get a heated waterer.

With the weather changing and the temps dropping how does everyone keep their water from freezing? Whether it's in a bowl a basic waterer or a pvc pipe waterer.

I have never kept my chickens' water from freezing.

I just expect to replace the water as soon as possible after sunup, and perhaps several more times during the day, depending on the climate and/or the weather.

It's easier if you have twice as many water containers as needed.
Put out fresh water, bring frozen container inside to thaw.

In really cold weather, when the water freezes in just an hour or two, the chickens will not eat enough (because they won't eat dry feed while thirsty.)

So I like to serve a dish of wet chicken feed at least once or twice a day at those times. The chickens will gobble it up, getting both feed and water at once.

I use a heated base inside coops, (electric needed), and rubber bowls outside coops.

This has worked splendidly for 5-6 years now:

Whether it's in a bowl a basic waterer or a pvc pipe waterer.
Would never use PVC pipe in my freezing clime.

Where in this world are you located?
Climate, and time of year, is almost always a factor.
Please add your general geographical location to your profile.
It's easy to do, and then it's always there!

I water three pens in an 8x12 shed with one waterer.
Set a patio stone on the floor, put a chimney liner block on top, and a floodlight in a metal headlamp holder, then top with another patio stone.
I arranged my pens to all meet at the waterer.
Best set up ever, and it keeps water thawed at below 30 temps in northern Canada
