Here's a pair of my Marans. It's hard to tell in these pics, but they are both feather shanked. This hen is an excellent broody (she's hatching me some Polish and Ameraucanas today!) and the rooster is very serious about his job as a rooster. I saw him send a hawk packing one day--after he got all of his girls into a safe place in the barn.
Oh I love the French chickens...lol I will have to look for some good pics that I can't find later. Here are a few.
Bantam Salmon Faverolles:
This was my breeding quad. Two roosters and two hens. They were about 8 months in this picture. Not a great one, but their whole pen was under an oak tree so there wasn't any sun...
Cuckoo Marans:
This was one of my breeding pens. Two roosters and about 15 hens. Some of the girls were in a bad molt. I believe this picture is of the Fugate line.
A pair of Braden line Cuckoo Marans:
The Birchin Marans breeding pen:
This line wasn't breeding true to type. The original rooster was Black Copper x Birchin and the hen was Cuckoo x Black Copper or Birchin. I can't remember. Some of the hens in that pen were pure black though. The first pic is grainy but the second is better. They are probably around 10-15 months in these pics.
