Agreed!!!! I just set my eggs 2 days ago. I can check real quick to see if it worked. When I broke open some eggs they were all fertile but one. So it went from 0% to 75%.

Seriously, it's not a male ego thing to not trim him. I have 9 other roosters that don't need trimming. I have another AM rooster that is with the exact same girls that is 95%. I've given him time, I've slept on it, now I'm just losing money. Jack is throwing beautiful blues, and those blues will eventually lead to a beautiful black. Johnny is a product of 2 blues

I have never had a rooster that was 0% after March. His brother is 95%, and I'm losing 3-4 eggs per day that I could be incubating. I have some very nice blues from Jack coming up, and I need to check the girls to see if they are carrying the leakage. I'm going to sell the black rooster, put the girls with the splash, then split back to a blue this winter for blacks next year. It's not ideal, but it's a great learning experience for an aspiring breeder

I have to agree with you now. Serious breeding requires tough choices. Even if his fertility improves, he may produce slow-pokes too. Cut your losses and move on.

Just stuffed 2 dozen shipped Barnevelder eggs and 12 local Barnevelder and Barnevelder/Marans mixed eggs in my Brinsea. 8 of the locals are stacked in a second layer- laying down, I'll flip them over a few times a day.

Will be interesting to see what happens!

Well that makes sense. Didn't realize it was that bad. Plus you can always get more from the blues. So worth it to cull and wait.

EE and Spitz hatch is winding down with 5 still in the hatcher. I ended up with two quitters during lockdown, but here is the gang that has moved to the brooder:



There are two blue Spitzhaubens (beautiful!) and five or six silvers in there. The rest are EEs out of my flock.

The other 81 eggs are set up in incubators and hatchers set to hatch on Monday, followed by turkeys on Thursday.
