I need to get to know someone that can take me mushrooming--I've had locally harvested chanterelles and lobster mushrooms, but fungi are something I'm paranoid enough about to not try to learn on my own! We were supposed to learn some edible plants on the fieldtrip yesterday, but the only plant (that I was close enough to the front of the pack to hear about, at least) that I know was shown was redwood sorrel, which I already somewhat suspected was what I already knew as sour grass (thanks to elementary outdoor school at Silver Falls (though everyone calls it Silvercreek Falls, the shorter name is the official one)--the taste just confirmed it. I predict nibbling on future hikes since I know it's what I thought it was

Yes, DH is pretty red too. I think Amy probably has taller trees, but otherwise you both come from pretty areas.
We have some tall trees too.... Maybe not as tall... But there are areas of old growth forest here that kind of take you back in time.
Of course. The pueblo people have been here a thousand years. This area is not going anywhere. It's kind of strange, after living with earthquakes my whole life, not to have any here. Guess it's kind of weird that I miss them. (Well the quakes under 5.0 at least. No one misses the big ones.)
I know the feeling though we live and always have lived right on the railroad tracks. When the mines shut down it gets real quiet here. The mines are supposed to shut down for goof this Summer gonna suck..... Aloy of jobs gone.... Thanks Obama
One of the true signs of spring...morels. These are from under the pear tree just off the patio. I tossed some trimmings there a few years ago, and the spores took root under the pear tree. I picked 30 or so and the squirrels and chipmunks took probably the same. They seem to think they are walnuts, they are planting them around the yard. If some take root in the other uncultivated areas, I'll be able to have a regular feast.
And another sign of spring...even though we are expecting frost tonight...smoker is running :) This is a 7 pound heritage turkey left over from November processing. Brined, dusted with Creole seasoning and smoked until done.
Nice Walnut... I went looking once but it was you early and we are way too dry been snowing here today...
Been there, done that... :gig Seriously, like last week... ;) I think twins is a bit of a stretch... but hey, my brotha from anotha motha!!! :highfive: LOVE morels!!! We have edible wild mushrooms here, but haven't found morels yet... :drool Hey!! No fair!! :plbb
My favorite are chicken mushrooms... And yes they taste like chicken... It's weird..... And I said twins cuz we are very similar habit wise.... We're definitely friends though

Morels are easy to identify though once someone shows you.... As far as I'm concerned the false morels are hard to identify either....

Those look delicious ! I want to learn how to harvest wild mushrooms without killing myself and a loved one.
