The pine straw is falling so I mowed about 2/3 of the yard and then hitched up the lawnsweeper to do the mowed sections and the driveway.

3 loads of pine straw in the run and the chickens are very happy about it -- large and small.

During the process pullets kept jumping out the door to get into the pile outside as I was carrying forks of bedding to the back. A couple of them ran right back in as soon as I got behind them but one of the Australorp hens gave me the runaround.

I'm glad none of the chicks got out.

It's almost leaf raking time! We're going to have a stretch of dry days after some dreary ones, so this weekend/next Monday I plan to get gobs of leaves for the run.

Does anyone know... are white pine needles ok for chickens? I can get a lot of those too.

If my loblolly and longleaf needles are fine I'm sure the white pine needles are fine. They're soft, rather than stiff.

Last year for Christmas I got my husband a leaf sucker/blower/mulcher. I think I've used it more than him for collecting leaves for the run :lau Love how your coop turned out btw!

DH bought me the new used lawnsweeper this summer. It's half-again the size of the old one that had come to the end of it's life and better-made.

You are all reminding me it is time to rake up some pine needles. Yes, I use white pine needles and they are wonderful. They really are lovely and soft. They work a treat for bedding.
