Dang, and I passed by some gorgeous hostas on clearance at the garden center yesterday, guess I'll be going back....

My chickens are going to be enclosed in large yard to prevent predators from snacking, but I LOVE the idea of planing a few "portable" gardens for them! Great idea... I'll get busy tomorrow.

My girls have been eating broccoli since they were babies...every morning they are given dry oats and broccoli. Then the afternoon treat is a granny smith apple and/or wheat bread heels...They are SPOILED ROTTEN girls but their eggs are delicious!

well, if they can't eat the vines, I don't suppose I'll be planting tomatoes in their run!! Glad I asked, and thanks for the info, never occurred to me they'd be a problem!!

It was just so pleasant and relaxing to sit out there on my milk crate and do the planting...kind of like some bonding time with them or something.... only had them a week now, so it was a nice way for us to hang out and get to know each other.... Heck, if they tear them up, it'll just give me a reason to do it again!!

yeah the actual plants will make them sick, but the tomatoes won't, so just grow them and then pick when ripe (because green tomatoes are bad for them too) and toss them to the girls!

we bought some chicks that were 7 weeks old about a month ago, and they don't even know how to scratch and they don't really know what treats are either. so it takes one of them to try what they are given (they are in a separate cage, because they are smaller than the others) and then if one likes it then they will all go for it. also if they see the others getting stuff and all riled up, then they do too. it takes time. try setting up something that you can put vegis and fruit and bread in, that they can peck at, when they want to. and it gives them something to do. my girls love to play with their food.

I'm a Newbie too and so far my girls seem to enjoy clover the most.
I pick just the flowers for them and they play tug o' war with a cloverhead

Grass clippings were a hit too - but it took them some time to figure out.

I haven't tried fruit or veggies yet.
Do I need to cut up small pieces - they're just 10wks old - or should I just give them a whole fruit/veg and let them pick?

I think I just have picky chickens. They love some fruits and veggies. Watermelon is a favorite also apple cores. But they won't touch the lettuce. Silly chickens. I planted cherry tomatoes and kale for them in the garden.
