Friday wasa day of devastiotion here

First off, sorry for your losses.

But back to topic. Your pellet gun will NOT humanely kill a hound, without a well placed shot. I doubt you will get a clean enough shot "in the heat of the moment". A .22 will be more effective, but shot will still have to be well placed.

I am a strong believer in it stops being a pet, and becomes predator AT MY PROPERTY LINE. Just keep in mind if you shoot, or bat (takes more then you would think)....don't let it get back home injured. If it "limps" off then you are liable for the damages of animal abuse. Make your shot count.

Good luck with your struggles. Maybe you can find a friend, or someone that could deliver your letter without causing more problems. But you will eventually have to see him. Your gonna have to bite the bullet, hold your tounge alittle....at least until it is resolved to your liking.

Good luck, and sorry for your loss.

This is pretty much where I am. I have called the police, they have been talked to. I may just not say anything. At first I was thinking $20 each for each laying bird and $5 each for my roosters (2) So I came up with $250.00 which I am pretty sure he is not going to be able to pay. So I think I MAY have some luck with him buying replacement chicks. That would be so much less and I could replace with the breeds I had if I ordered from a hatchery not just the feed store.

Cop said It was 30.00 to file suit said I would win and then the court fees would be added to my awarded judgement. But I wonder HOW they would collect the money?? If he isn't feeding the dog well then he must not have much extra$$$.

In some jurisdictions they can seize and auction off property owned by the losing party to pay the judgment.

the county / city will also attach liens judgements to any monies ( paychecks unemployment checks etc ) coming in to satisfy awarded judgements made by the courts

I would send him a letter to get the ball rolling. I would list damages in the letter and make it certified. You don't know if in a week or a month the dog may come back. You want to have something in writing to show you have contacted the owner because this could get uglier.

I am sorry for your loss. I would be devastated.

I personally would be reluctant to think that a pellet gun would have much impact on a dog that still manages to be aggressive after being pepper sprayed. I say that because what if you're in a confrontation with the dog and it turns out that it only makes the dog angry, that puts you in a vulnerable spot.

I haven't read all of the previous posts, so sorry if this is redundant, but I would let the owner(s) know that the very next time the dog is on your property it will be killed period. tell them(without being erratic or threatening) that the authorities have verified that you have the right to protect life and limb of you and your livestock, and if that means shoot to kill, then that's what it means. and that you aren't wanting to be mean but you also aren't willing to lose any more than you already have.

and as far as the particulars of which...um...apparatus to use next time(if there is a next time but hopefully not), maybe it's the mama hen in me, but I would go with the most guaranteed way to get the job done, after all, the dog was growling and lunging at you, right?

I hope they do end up reimbursing you for the damages, even though I know there's no dollar sign on all the time and effort that goes into it and that really stinks, I'm sorry.

UPDATE!!!!

Man came over a minute ago and asked ME how much he owed me. I was beyound shocked. Said dog would NEVER be out again!

So we have agreed for him to buy replacement chicks for me from Cackle hatchery. This will be cheaper for him and yet better than what I had expected.

Have yet to get chicks (have to place order) but HE came to MY door. Said he was afraid of facing me, as I was him.

SO that is a pretty good MAN I would say!

What a relief maybe you two can end up being friends. I had been thinking if you left food out for his dog maybe then she wouldn't go after your chickens - and would lose her aggression towards you.
