My Speckled Sussex hens are very interested in everything I do; love them! Some EEs are friendly, some not. They are crossbreeds, so more varied genetics.
Belgian d'Uccles and cochins, and bantam Brahmas, all may be friendly.
Cocks will vary, from fine to awful, depending. Salmon Favorelles tend to be very mellow though.
NO HORMONES are used in chickens in the USA!!! It's been illegal for a long time! Those pathetic fast growing Cornishx birds are the products of genetic development, not hormones. The same is true for turkeys. Mary
That's not entirely true. There's an FDA limit on the quantity of hormones you can introduce to a meat/egg bird's system without it being an illegal and "harmful" quantity, but I wouldn't trust the damn FDA as far as i can throw 'em. That's a whole different story, i could explain if you'd like.
And genetic development/engineering isn't exactly any better. Normally hens are fed a corn mix where the corn is genetically engineered unless otherwise stated to be certified organic, and in a ten-generation study of rats in France, it showed that ingesting GMO corn and other products slowly caused the rats to become infertile and every generation grew larger tumors until they were both infertile and immobile. Frankly, i think i'll do without.
