Hello I have a question about chickens I've been puzzling over,Why is it that when I put young pullets/cockerels with my rooster Leon he gets along famously with them and protects them shows them the ropes?While my adult hens bully them like no tomorrow?Does anyone have an explanation for this?

That’s easy. A good rooster takes care of all members of his flock. He takes responsibility for the entire flock when he assumes charge. Hens are much more self-centered.

It may be just the way i see it but i always believed:
The rooster sees the pullets as future mates.
The hens see them as competition until they accept them as a full members of the flock.
