Let me say this. I have met some really awesome people from Texas. Now, Texas is it's our country. And me being from California?? There was no way I could have survived there. I am a white woman from California who is overweight. I think I had a target on my back.

I had no freakin' idea! I thought that New England bred uptight obnoxious northerners moving down to the southeast brought trouble on themselves... but who knew it happened elsewhere. So where is it safe to move to? Fargo?

You did the best you could Kelli. Is your DH okay with things? Is he still reporting to less than ideal people?

Dh is ok. He's not happy, of course, but we both know that if I don't get a job soon we will lose our house, and we aren't comfortable with that. He got assigned back to Security Forces, so he's back in his original job field. We just don't know where (or if) he will be going.

As for the racism thing, I have to keep reminding dh (and sometimes myself) that we will not become part of the problem and to treat everyone we meet with kindness and respect, even if they don't give those things to us.

When someone runs into/over me, I say excuse me. When someone cuts in line, I take a step back so they have enough space. When someone flips me off, I wave as though I think they're saying hi. If they stare, I smile back. It's hard, and it hurts my feelings, but I refuse to let other people's hatred rub off on me.

New Yorkers seem to love everyone. At least I had a good experience there. Just too much CITY for me. Rural parts of CA are great, the cities suck.

Perhaps potential employers just keep telling me that so they don't hurt my feelings. Maybe speaking Spanish is not a requirement, but just a way that they can tell me they don't want to hire me without it looking like it's my fault?

But every time I apply for a job, the first question is "Do you speak Spanish?". Which, sadly, I do not. End of interview.

Alot here in CA want/expect you to be bilinguial as well. I'm having to learn at 32.

Recently, I decided to stop in to the feed store I pass by every day whilst on the way home from school. I wasn't impressed, but I knew I needed food, and thought I'd buy some. About the only positive thing I can say about the store is that they loaded it into the trunk for me

5o + miles later when I went to take it out of the trunk I realized it was very CHICK-GO. I have no chicks!

So some time had passed (less than a week) and I remember I should take it back (UNOPENED, UNDAMAGED) to the store and swap for the food I had intended to buy. And do you think they would do it? NOOOOOOO...

So, I've listed the food on BST for free. If anyone wants 50# of medicated chick feed... come on over.

Honestly, I don't think you can understand it unless you live it. If you are a yankee (like me) stick to the yankee states. You won't be safe (or agree with social mores) anywhere else.

My sister lived in Biloxi Mississippi for a while. She told me she was threatened and followed by a group of young black males. She told me she was at a park once with her young son and a someone approached her a harrassed her. Told her she wasn't welcome and to go home. It got to the point she wouldn't leave the house without her dh. At the time I thought she was paranoid. Now I believe her about that too.

Racism is not dead. Not by a long shot. It seems I was much more sheltered than I thought I was.

Me too. Years ago (before 9/11/2001), I guessed that the next huge trouble that the USA would have would be internal (because external enemies weren't apparent at that time). And that the internal problem would be race. I haven't thought of that in the time since until you told us your experiences. But maybe we'll eventually have both internal and external enemies. Good thing I'll have kicked the bucket by then.
