So my friend gave me the starter for the Amish Friendship bread. Squish the contents in the bag every day. Day 5 add sugar, milk, flour. My question is, at the ten day mark when it's time to add more ingredients, divide into 4 more starters, can I use what I have to bake the bread instead of adding all the stuff to make 4 more starters? I want the two loaves of bread, but don't really want to have the process start all over again. There are alot of starters being passed around and don't feel like finding homes for the ones I'll get. Let me know if anyone has any advice. Thanks.

I have never done this and would like to hear how it is done, what it is... and how I can go about it!

The starter is easy to make, I'll post the recipe later on. Similar to a sourdough starter. I've frozen it before, maybe I'll do that.

vfem, hope this some through. It's fun to pass around the starter to friends and family. But after a few months, you won't be able to give it away.

I've always put the starter into a ziplock. Over time, especially after day 5 when you add suger, milk, flour, "gas" will build up in the bag. Keep an eye on it. They have been known to burst!!

yes, you can just make more. I've done that before ;-)... every starter that you would be giving away is about what you would be using to make a batch of the loaves though, so you will have like 5x's as much bread when you are done.
