Is this mating season for them?

I need to find out because I am sure I saw Ms Frightful herself in the sky as I drove home this afternoon! She is sooo much bigger than Romeo and has a much more obviously red tail.

Just found this and am feeling better now:

The male and female participate in the building of the nest which is a platform constructed of sticks and twigs, lined with bark and greenery.

The nest is located in a tree 15 to 120 feet above ground. Sometimes nest are built on cliffs.

The female lays 1 to 5 bluish white eggs with dark marks. Most commonly lays 2 to 3 eggs. The eggs are incubated by both male and female (mostly female) for 28 to 35 days.

The young will leave the nest in 44 to 46 days after hatching.

Raises only one brood a season. May re-nest if first nesting attempt is unsuccessful.

How many people would be HAPPY to see a hawk flying in the vicinity of their coop?

She was in the sky over my yard when I got home from work this afternoon, and flew away as I pulled into the driveway. NO DOUBT ABOUT IT. It was Frightful.
And saw her again a second ago, flying past our yard to venture through another part of the valley. It is warm and windy and she was gorgeous as she swooped and furled and danced in the breeze.

THIS IS SO AMAZING! thats all i have to say...we have a red tail hawk that we named sailor when we were younger...hes lived near our farm for probably 7 or 8 years!

i have a question:
when they mate do they mate for life? i ask because we either had a new pair venture into Sailors territory and made a nest with chicks...(we heard their screeching all summer...) or sailor had a mate that moved on after the chicks left because sailor is now the only inhabitant of the area...THANKS!

They usually mate for life, although if they lose their mate they will take on a new one. That's why it was important to get Frightful released before her mate gave up on her.

I don't see them flying together, and have in the past, so I think maybe he's sitting in the nest while she takes a break each afternoon.

that is just wonderful to see her like that- so do they have a flight schedule? i know ours seem to fly through about 10 and then about 4- we have a pair nesting near us- so i keep the edibles out of the reach those times....

Lori - just found this thread and read it straight through. What an amazing story and what a courageous person you are and what a delightful outcome. Give yourself a pat on the back and give CJ a hug from me.

I do think they have patterns they fly. That's why my daughter has seen Frightful more than me. Apparently the fly-overs here are between 2-4 in the afternoon.

Thnks Karen! Will hug CJ for sure

I've lost a couple of chickens to hawks. It's sad but I'd rather feed an endangered animal than a stray cat. A hawk in flight is a beautiful thing to observe.

If you go to Lake Compounce and take the sky ride up the side of the mountain, on your way back down you sometimes get to watch them circling BELOW you, Just plain beautiful.
