Frightful's been at it again! New COOL sighting, post 191

Cetawin, I was taught to love all raptors at an early age. And I have had Red-Tails in my skies most of my life. Even a few messages, but much more subtle than this one.


I am happy to report that I got another Frightful e-mail from Katie, "She is standing and has eaten another mouse on her own...I would not have expected her to perk up so well!"

She's not out of danger; she is 'frightfully' skinny and malnourished. But I feel very optimistic

We raised 5 baby hawks in California. Their nest was blown out of our huge oak tree by a storm. the parents never went far. We placed them in a rabbit cage with the top removed so the parents could feed them. They always watched us when we fed the babies hamburger after school. only a small handfull each day. The cage was placed in our fenced yard by the garage. under the overhang for protection from rain and sun. we placed a pan of water in the corner. kept it full. after about a week they began hoping out of the cage and around the yard. always returning at night to the box and what was left of the nest. a week or so more they beag to fly around the yard. None of them, even the parents ever attacked us or ever did more than screech. we always were aware that we were being watched when around the cage. We moved slow and moved away if they began to screech very much. They loved the hamburger treats. soon they flew off. As long as we lived there (several years) the hawks always nested in our oak trees and hung around the area. Of course someone always screams about the law! But I say SHUT UP!!! I am an adult. I can feed and care for what ever I want. If you wanna take me to jail for being a good human being then do it, or shut up! They where never handled or treated as pets. we always respected their space and made sure the parents had access. the parents would bring them mice and birds and stuff too. This might not help. But I thought I would share my experiences with hawks. Just be mindful of the WILD in wild animal! No matter how sweet and cute an animal is still wild at heart and in instinct. They can and will react in wild animal fasion when spooked, in pain or in fear! Just a word of warning.

This is a wonderful! Aren't you glad that you listened to yourself? If you weren't aware of your surroundings you wouldn't have picked up on the hawk nearby. You did a great thing for the hawk. Now she has a chance. All because of you. You should have a smile on your face for days! Oh, we'll all be checking this thread out to see how she does!

THAT LOOKS EXACTLY LIKE THE HAWK THAT I HAD AROUND MY YARD!!!!!!!! HE/SHE KILLED ABOUT 20 OF MY CHICKENS!!!! Do you live in Sevier county next to the Jefferson County line? I live in White Pine. I am being DEAD serious. I don't know if I didn't get all the details or there are alot of hawks where we live. I don't think its the same one but looks exactlt like it. I don't think they go that far. That looks exactly like the one I seen. I seen it in the tree with my chickens plucking feathers off. I was being extremely still for about 45 minutes. My chicken was already dead so just let it have it. If the darn fines weren't so big, I would have some hawk soup just like Mr. Racoon and Mr. and Mrs. Possum.

Try Glen McCoy. She is in Hamblen County but she deals with wildlife. Have dealt with her before. I found a few baby squirrels that fell out of there moms nest. So we raised them ( 3 of them) and whenit was time to let them loose, we couln't get them to go. (My mom is a animal lover). We had 2 dogs so they would definetly get killed so we took them to her. DO NOT I REPEAT DO NOT CALL ANY WHAT SO EVER WILDLIFE AGENCY!!!!!! DO NOT!!! I will not get into it on here. Just please trust me. It will save you from some bad headaches and maybe a bad word or 12

What a story, My hat is off to you. Sounds like Freightful is on the right track and unless there is still something unknown should continue to improve. the real concern as you pointed out is how much toll it has all taken on her system but eating solid food is a very good sign for several reasons. One she is comfortable enough around people to even eat at all, and two it is some indication that her organs are not shutting down. every mouse she eats is one more nudge in the nutrition issue. saying prayers that her strength holds out and that she actually increases her solid food intake.
I am also so very glad you did not call Fish and game or anyone like that. My bet is that you would not only have found out it was illegal to catch her for any reason, but that it was also illegal to transport her anywhere. I always ask my questions to the "Officials" as hypothetical but find out the laws and such are very strange and often complicated. At any rate she is now where she can be cared for and many many fingers and toes crossed in hopes for her.

You did a fantastic thing rescuing Frightful. She is a beautiful hawk. We have lots of hawks here and I've seen them sitting in the trees and flying but I have never seen one up close. You took great pics of her. I hope she makes a full recovery.
