I got this strange looking creature from a local farmer when I was replacing a four day old chick that died. I intended to replace the lost chick with an EE and a silkie, which I did, and then the nice farmer gave me Hester (or perhaps Herman) for free. She is at least 14 weeks old, maybe 16, not exactly sure. I got her 14 weeks ago and it was thought that she was 2 weeks old or so then. I thought she was a frizzle, but she may be a frazzle. It took a long time for her feathers to come in, and even now I can find some bare spots under all that fraz (she has not had feathers plucked by the other hens). She's shy and hates to be picked up, but I do hope she's a she, because she's best buddies with the silkie, Fancy Nancy. I'm curious about the gender of my silkie as well, but I can handle that in a separate thread. So what kind of mix/breed is she? She's tiny, has blueish/greenish legs and feet and grey skin, and she makes different sounds than my other hens, not like my EE or my White Rocks. She sounds more like a wild bird that I'd hear out my window. Heerrrrreee's Hester!

Interesting. The red is new, in the last week or so. And I know those wattles are foreboding. No crowing, or roo games yet. What do you think she he is?

frizzle cockerel
Agreed

Thank you! Any guesses on what the mix might be? I'm just curious. He is smaller than my White Rocks--about the same as my silkie. I think there are many breeds that can be bantams, and I think that it's possible to create lots of different frizzle mixes. I'm also curious to see if he has any lucky trying to mate with the bigger girls. He's second to last in the pecking order. If he's noisy I can't keep him. As time goes by I'll update and let you all know if/when he crows.

He looks like a frizzle wyandotte cross.

It could be a girl. Especially if it has Wyandotte in it. I always find birds with rose combs develop redness/wattles early. My girls always do.

I have roos a lot younger with more development. I'd give it a bit longer yet. I would not say hen either. It's a toss up for me. Especially since it is approximately 16 weeks old. My boys usually always start roo behaviour around this time. Give it a couple more weeks. You will notice a crow soon enough if it is a boy.

It doesn't appear to be frazzled to me, but it could be. Usually these birds are very naked.

Good to know about the possible Wyandotte mix and early comb development. I don't mind waiting. I'm curious, but Hester is an easy bird and if she even if she ends up being a noisy roo I have some rehoming options. I'll post results when she/he crows or produces and egg.

Great find, aoxa. Thanks! It does make me think I have a Herman though, as that frizzle Wyandotte seems to have less wattle going on. Time will tell....
