I have a main coop, which is insulated and all that, but would like to turn that into a hatch/grow/winter coop. In the Summer it gets so humid here in souther KY I dont like keeping them in the coop, even with the windows and door open. I would like to build some breeder pens on the outside of my coop, but have alot of ideas and thought seeing something that resembles what I have in mind may help me decide. I will have to post one later.but my pens are mostly 6 feet long and 4 wide.the back is treated plywood and I use colored metal roofing( white to reflect) on top. On the pens that face the hot afternoon sun in summer I have smoke colored PVC panels to shade the birds from the hot sun. It still allows light but cuts out the blistering sun. I also run a strip of that or clear plexiglass on the sides to keep rain from blowing in.this size pen works well for bantams and are small enough to move if you need by two people. I tried to keep birds in coops on the ground, but it didn't work for me.too many things like to eat chickens, chicken eggs and chicken food, lol. I also keep the bottom of the pen waist high for me. The roof line is about 6' tall and that makes it about right to hang feeders and waterers so the birds are at the right height to eat and drink.I cover my pens in the winter with 4 mil plastic and it keeps the pens warm enough even with 8 inches of snow that the water bucket(3 gal nipple) did not freeze in any of my pens with no external heat.
