Just got home and found my young Frizzle with her eye swollen shut. Went to the local Tractor Suppy and they gave me Vetericyn Animal Opthalmic Gel to put on her eye. Should I treat her other eye since it is starting to water? Her sister has not shown an signs of a problem, but she snuggles so closely. Should I treat her as well? I used a Q-Tip for each eye to make sure not to spread the infection. Any suggestions???

go ahead and treat both eyes just in case, it won't hurt her. I wouldn't treat the others unless they exhibit similar symptoms, but like you said, if you do - use clean Q-tips for each eye/bird

I have had the same problem, dont worry she'll be fine. First you will need some Tylan 50, you can find it at tractor supply. Next you'll need something to administer a shot, a neeedle of some sort, they are pretty cheap. You then need to put a very small amount in the shot, since this is a chick. You need to then pull back a patch of feathers behind the breast and just in front of the leg muscle. You then administer the shot just bellow the skin, NO DEEPER!!!!! also make sure that you do not hit any veins, you'll be able to see them under the skin. I would recomend seperating the chick until the eye is healed. If all goes well the chick should be better the next day, maybe even within the hour. Also get some visine eye drops, it will help the bird open its eyes. I have this happen quite a bit with my birds after show, dont worry she will be fine. Hope this helps.

Both eyes are really bad now. Both are swollen shut. Using warm most paper towel to help keep inflection soft. We are heading to Tractor Supply right now. Her sister is fine. Both are eating and drinking. I will post more photos to update progress. Noone around here has ever seem anything like it. Thanks for giving me hope!!!!

OK... so with shaking hands we adminstered the Tylan50. She is 14 oz, so we used 1/4 mL just under the skin. She drank some water and ate some yogurt. She is resting in a towel at my side.
Unfortunately (NOT), when I went to the store they just got in a ship load of 4 day old Americana chicks... Yes, four followed us home

I guess that was my way of keeping a happy home while we hope for a speedy recovery

As for the sick Frizzle... How often should I administer the medication? I will upload the latest photos and post shortly.

and congrats on your new lil ones.

We thought getting the Veterycin in gel would be easier to put in her eye. I put the Q-tip in the gel and roll it onto her eye... getting it into the eye. Seems to stay there, but her feathers stick to her eye! Trying to figure out how often to administer the shots. Any ideas? She is back in the cage along side her sister... EATING
