Hello Everyone,

I am not new to chickens, but I am new to Poultry Shows. I recently bought sizzles because the were just so cute. I have always thought that a frizzled silkie and a sizzle was the same thing. Through some research, I have gathered that a frizzled Cochin was originally used in her breeding stock for the frizzled feathering, which in turn makes a Sizzle a mutt right?? Even though it was about 14 generations ago that the Cochin was originally used. So, I guess my questions is does frizzle naturally occur in a Silkie, like a Cochin. Is a Sizzle and a Frizzled Silkie the same thing. Do I show them under Silkie or All Other Variety if its a mixed breed?? The lady I bought them from apparently does very well at Poultry shows, but her website said Sizzle are not yet a recognized breed, but are judged to the Silkie Standard. I am SO confused

Thank you to anyone who responds

Technically, all of them are considered mutts currently like you said, they aren't recognized breeds yet. All genes can occur in every chicken breed, their have been multiple accounts of Ameraucana chickens getting the silkie gene so I don't why the frizzled gene wouldn't pop up in a silkie. Best of luck and welcome to BYC!

Thank you :) Okay thats what I thought, that they arent recognized due to being a mixed breed, but if any gene can occur in a chicken breed, then by that means a Frizzled Silkie would be purebred, right? It would be a Silkie with a Frizzled feather gene?

It's my understanding that a sizzle is a frizzled silkie with cochin feathers (barbed) while a frizzled silkie has the frizzling with silkie feathers. I may be wrong about that, there are some real experts around that know what they're talking about! But I do know I keep hoping for a frizzled silkie and getting sizzles. I wonder if the barbed feathers are a dominant gene? Anyway, enjoy your new sizzles. They are too cute!!!
