I think one of my black runners laid her first egg today, because it is a dark grey color. None of my chocolate runners every laid this color before. Is it normal for a black runner to lay this color, or does it mean she has a bit of Cayuga somewhere on her genetic line?

Also my chocolate runners haven’t laid an egg since June. But they are all active and seem normal.

I wasn’t expecting them to lay until the spring, but I went out to install a toy for them and found it. I’m over the moon right now!
Not so much for the ducks; they are terrified of the toy thus far!

While i have not received an egg that dark, some of my F&W runners have sometimes coated their greenish eggs with that deep brown coat. Especially when they (re-)start the egg business. I don't think it is something to be worried about.

I’ll get a picture of it when I head back out. It’s this toy which I filled with a whole bunch of lettuce greens. I attached a bell on the underside too.

It’s funny that to the duck’s mind, anything new is most certainly a monster that wants to eat them.

I get a cabbage, drill a hole right through it, push a string through it with a dowel and hand it form my run. They love it and it lasts about a week. Then you load up another one!
