Finally got the nest boxes ready, and now we just need some eggs! View attachment 3594724Thankfully Star kept his personable nature while we were on vacation, and is still a human friendly rooster. He does make sure to keep an eye on what I’m doing, but I think he’s mostly hoping I bring treats. He also started to crow a few days ago! We had our first two-egg day, so it looks like the other Olive Egger is laying! Who will be next, the Easter Eggers or the Faverolles? Right now I have my money on the Faverolles, just because one of them kinda tries to do the escort call, but VERY badly.

Speaking of which, I happened to be outside yesterday when someone must have done the first real escort call ever, because all the rest of the chickens were outside the coop, and came to immediate attention. It was as if they all knew what they were hearing was important, but none of them had any idea what it meant. There was a great amount of clucking, shuffling and looking around. It reached a peak when Star, apparently not knowing what to do, started mimicking the escort call in return. I never saw such a commotion in our old flock. It was hilarious. No egg at the time, but that came later.

Well, I was right that one of the Faverolles would be the next to lay. But she did it in the floor of the coop and it got buried and I discovered it by stepping on it when I was refreshing the coop litter.

Accidents happen with young layers not making it to the nest boxes in time. Hopefully next time eggs are in the box!

I’ve now had an egg from all my varieties of hens except the Cream Legbars. However, when the Easter eggers seemed to start laying, the olive eggers seem to have stopped. I guess it’s possible that it’s still the OE’s laying and their eggs just got lighter in color. But I haven’t even seen them poking around the nest boxes. I’ve scoured the run to see if maybe they found a place outside now that there is more competition for the boxes, but haven’t found anything. They are acting normally. Should I be concerned or is this normal? I remember reading somewhere that OE’s were not very consistent layers, especially at the beginning.
