Frostbite and Protecting Combs

We are in an area with temps below zero. Our two hens combs look okay so far, but the rooster has frost bite. He is the only one who was willing to let us apply vasoline, too. Poor guy. As far as I know it doesn't bother him. The manager at our feed store said he should be fine. It may fall off or heal. Time will tell.

Things are finally warming back up a little here, though it still gets into the single digits at night. My roo and a couple hens got minor frostbite on the extremities of their combs despite me putting 2 heat lamps over the roosts at night (things are very well ventilated and there is no humidity at all in the coop, but -30 is just cold!). They never seemed bothered by it or in pain, and in time the nipped parts just turned hard and black, then fell off. Now there are a few sleeker, more aerodynamic combs in the yard, but everybody is doing a-ok!

Some of my girls definitely got frostbite this winter. We have had a lot of snow and unseasonable cold weeks.
