A while ago I posted about one of my roosters, HeiHei, having HORRIBLE frostbite on his feet that got to the point where all the frost-bitten scales had fallen off and bled everywhere in the coop and run. Well, it hasn’t been getting any better—in fact it’s now worse. The scales between the toes (like where a duck would have webbing on its feet) is red and frostbiten now, and he can walk but he is in lots of pain when he does. He goes to eat and drink but when he gets there he does it laying down.

I already know the frostbite is horrible and for sure frostbite, so I won’t put pictures on this unless somebody REALLY wants them...but I’m scared that everything will just fall off and bleed like crazy and I hate seeing him hobble around all the time, then laying in the snow so I have to pick him up or else he’ll freeze.

It’ll be finally over freezing this weekend, but I’m pretty sure that means it’ll be rainy too, since that’s what it has been like lately.

Any help or advice on what to do to save him without having to re-integrate or coddle him so much that he needs permanent support alone in the house, where he would then be stuck until it warmed up outside—which doesn’t seem to be happening soon.

Roosters will get red on their feet as hormones surge in spring. It generally is a sign of fertility. Can you share pictures? Frostbite can take a few months to fully resolve from start to finish. If toes are involved it can take even longer for them to fall off and stubs to heal.

I have never separated anyone for frostbite as long as no one is bothering them.

It really helps to see pictures of frostbite to offer suggestions. I looked on your other thread, and it only looked like he might partially lose a couple of his toes. I would at least apply some 10% betadine (povidone iodine) to his feet and let it dry when temps are above freezing.

I am having very similar issues with frostbite if anyone can help...
I feel absolutely awful about it.
I got a pair of Svart Honas about a month and a half ago. When I got them she said "oh he's got a little frostbite but it will be fine." I checked him out and only seen a little on his comb so I went ahead and got them and brought them home. They supposedly had never had heat so I put them into a coop with dry bedding, no heat, and ventilation. At first they were doing fine.
We live in southern Michigan/Northern Indiana area.
Anyways... I started to notice the scales on his feet turning gray and sore looking. Then they peeled off. Slowly his comb started to fall off! And he just had a toe fall off!
I am wondering if there is anything at all I can do to save this poor boys toes or anything I can give him to help. He has been moved with his girl into a different coop today with heat in it so that maybe we can keep some more of the damage to a minimum. This guy is a wonderful rooster and has protected his girl the whole time I've had him so she's not been touched by the frostbite demon. I just don't want to have to cull him. He was expensive and he's just an amazing buddy! If anyone has anything I can do to help that would be wonderful!!
