I was wondering if adult Toms get frostbite on their faces and snoods in the winter. It's been in the 10s this week and in the negatives at night (Fahrenheit). I'm worried that my tom's face will get too cold. This morning the tip of his snood was white but it turned red after a few minutes. Any advice is appreciated.

It is possible but not likely. My toms spend the nights out in all kinds of weather including down to -30°F. The only one that ever got frostbite was a BBB tom and that happened the one time it got to -40°F here.

While I never see temps like that here in S.E. Oklahoma, it has been my observation that most turkeys in cooler weather will tuck their heads under the wing, while roosting, to keep their heads warm. Turkeys tend to be more suited to survival in cold temps than are chickens, a chicken will roost with their heads out and have their combs freeze, when it gets really cold here, mid teens, I have to put my single comb birds inside.

Blessings,

Bo

I keep meaning to take a picture of my "headless" turkeys. The guineas do the same.

Well I spoke too soon, we have had temps near zero to below zero for the last few days starting on the 14th. Turkeys are faring very well but the chickens are hating every minute of this. I'm tired of carrying water from the creek to my birds 50 yards away, good exercise though, while trudging through the snow!

Stay warm,

Bo
