(If this isn't in the right place, sorry. Not sure honestly where to put it)

If a bird were to freeze to death, are ypu still able to process and use it as food if you know thats what it died from? My family always says to not eat an animal you didnt kill yourself since you don't know what killed it (obviously aside from supermarket meat), but if you know the cold killed it, would it be safe?

I had 2 that froze from this cold snap (one wandered out of the barn and got lost, and the other followed her), and it makes me feel awful that they just went to waste. If this (hopefully not) happens again next year, as long as they remain frozen, would it be safe to use them as food?

I would think that from a food safety side it would be safe, but that the blood freezing in the tissue would adversely impact the quality. Maybe could still be used for stock/broth?

How cold? I'm assuming below zero f.
The blood in the meat can be mostly removed in salt water. I hear deer get hit on the road in front of my house and collect them. Sometimes Lots of meat is good on them but full of blood. Salt bath takes it out.

The night we lost them was about -20 and the day wasn't much warmer, maybe -17

I would cook them up and if the emotional ick factor is too much, feed them to the dog. Lots of things we refuse to eat was commonly eated yrs ago and still is in other countries
Okay. I'll do that if it ever happens again. It sucks because one if these was a Cemani too, so it was even more sad to put her on the compost pile. If rather be able to do something with them than nothing, even if they were pets

So sorry about your birds. :( I have nothing to give except some emotional support. That you said this:
rather be able to do something with them than nothing, even if they were pets
Is incredibly loving and respectful of life. That you are thinking of how to not let them go to waste is just so beautiful! I don’t even have the words to express it fully, just.... *verklempt*
