FROZEN CORN TREATS TO BEAT THE SUMMER HEAT!

Can you feed chicks this, mine are 3 weeks old but I live in hot Alabama.

Yes, you can. Just make sure they have access to grit.

At 3weeks old IMHO chicks can have pretty much any type of treat you would give your adults.

Other frozen ideas would be do the same with the muffin pan, freeze any chopped fruit or veggie or a combination.

Mine are adults now, but still love chopped fruits/veggies mixed with their food. You can also hang fruit/veggies for them to pick at.

I live in Alabama and was told don't give your chicks (5 weeks old)corn because it generates heat for the chicks to digest and will give them a heat stroke. Has anyone heard of this? I have fed them corn on the cob after we eat it and the corn frozen in muffin pans with water. I sure don't want to hurt my babies but they sure do love it!

Moderation is key.

I too have read it generates heat, but I give mine adults fresh or frozen corn in the summer, but I don't feed a lot at one time and haven't had any problems.

In the winter I give a little cracked corn.

Now I'm wondering if fresh is metabolized differently than dried....hmmm...

What is the recipe? Maybe 1-2 cans corn?

Welcome to BYC!

I don't think there really is a recipe, just use enough corn to fill your muffin tins and freeze them (see page 1). I don't know how much is in a can of corn

I grow my own, but guessing, I would think a can would fill a 6 cup muffin tin. You could also add goodies that your flock likes - a little chopped tomato, green beans, berries, apple, etc., get creative with your frozen treats.

I split one can of corn between the 12 cups - added about a tablespoon of frozen peas as well - then added water- worked out perfect. The girls loved it!
