Frozen eggs

If you need free insulation, check CraigsList or Freecycle for bagged leaves. Loads of people were giving them away, some still might have them. Whatever bedding you're using for the chickies, put it in big black garbage bags and tie closed. Put another black bag over the top to keep moisture out, stack outside your coop. Likewise any paper garbage from the house - anything that doesn't have food on it that might attract pests. Stacks of newspaper - if you contact your local convenience stores or gas stations, newspapers have their front page stripped and sent back to the office, the rest is thrown away. Bunches of those stacked in plastic.

Good luck! You know you can still eat the frozen eggs, right? Peel the shell off and put 'em in a ziplock.

Im confused about this . What is the purpose of the garbage bags filled w papers ? Is this supposed to insulate ? Im wondering because I have tons of access to papers weekly , my parents run a route and just throw them away

Yes. Newspapers were used for many years to insulate the walls of houses. It's not as good as fiberglass, and it will compress as it degrades, but if you only need it for the winter season, stacking paper in plastic bags and putting it around the coop will help insulate it significantly. Just don't put it inside the coop - sometimes the decaying paper ink can cause respiratory in pet birds, and I'd assume it's the same with chickies. But outside the walls, wrapped in a double layer of plastic, you should be fine.

I noticed quite a few people from the PNW in this thread, many of whom are new to BYC. Welcome!! Be sure to check out the Washingtonians thread over on "Where am I? Where are you!" section.

We've found just 1 frozen egg so far. It wasn't broken, so I put it into the fridge to warm up.
