frozen eggs

We live in usda zone 3 where it is currently -7C. It will get down to -40 in February. I am already having a lot of eggs freeze and crack. Any suggestions on how to prevent freezing without heating the whole hen house (I only have 18 chickens)? Are there any considerations I should be aware of when using or storing previously frozen eggs?

If you add a lot of insulation, and collect eggs more often, they might not freeze as quickly. Also, try using straw in your nesting boxes if you aren't already- straw is hollow, and will retain the hen's body heat longer than shavings will. Hope this helps!

Can you run electricity out to the coop? A heating element in the nest box (i.e. a seed sprouting pad) might keep the nest bottom warm enough to prevent freezing.

seedling heating pads work great...connected to a $10 amazon thermocube. we use roll outs and the eggs are heated to 10-20° F higher than ambient.

I forgot to mention that if you get a broody in the winter-which is unlikely but still- don't discourage her! She'll keep the eggs warm until you can collect them.
